– Collection of street art makes ‘The Z’ about much more than shopping and parking –
DETROIT, Oct. 10, 2013 – Detroit-based Bedrock Real Estate Services and Library Street Collective, a Detroit-based fine art gallery, today announced a dynamic art project that will make visiting ‘The Z’ development in downtown Detroit a destination. The Z project invited the best street artists, muralists, fine artists and graffiti artists from around the world to transform the interior walls of the structure into unique and interesting public murals.
The Z, Bedrock’s first Detroit ground-up development, is a 10-story, specialty street-level retail and parking development that will create 34,000 square feet of retail space, along with 1,300 new parking spaces. The new structure zigzags from the corner of Broadway and East Grand River to the corner of Library Street and Gratiot, occupying what was previously a surface lot. Construction on The Z began in late 2012 and will be completed in December of this year.
“The Z isn’t just about shopping and parking; it will allow visitors an opportunity to experience refreshing and intriguing art inside a building they would least expect to see it,” said Dan Mullen, Vice President of Development at Bedrock. “From the abstract facade to boutique retail, along with the street-art experience, The Z will be a place people want to visit over and over again.”
Library Street Collective, located next to The Z, commissioned a total of 27 artists from all over the world to participate in The Z project:
• Detroit-based, REVOK
• Saner (Mexico City, Mexico)
• Dabs & Myla (Melbourne, Australia)
• Tristan Eaton (Los Angeles, USA)
• Interesni Kazki (Kiev, Ukraine)
• b. (Athens, Greece)
• HOWNOSM (San Sebastian, Spain)
• Hense (Atlanta, USA)
• SMASH137 (Basel, Switzerland)
“Detroit has both a rich history and a bright future in arts and culture. We are confident that The Z will add another dimension by changing the rules and expectations, as well as elevating the experience for those living, working and visiting downtown,” said Anthony Curis, partner at Library Street Collective. “It’s a privilege to host such a dynamic group of artists ranging from Maya Hayuk and Lucy McLauchlan to Augustine Kofie and Detroit-based REVOK.”
Bedrock Real Estate Services and Library Street Collective are creating a documentary about the project which will be shown on screens throughout the The Z to give visitors insight into how this special destination came to life.
