Fairey to paint significant, permanent murals at One Campus Martius and ‘The Belt’
May 8, 2015 [DETROIT] – Renowned American contemporary street artist Shepard Fairey will paint his largest mural to date in downtown Detroit, on the Gratiot Avenue and Farmer Street side of One Campus Martius. The 184’ x 60’ design will emerge over the course of several weeks. Bedrock Real Estate Services and Library Street Collective partnered to bring the noted artist to Detroit for this exciting project. Fairey will also paint a permanent mural in the art-filled alley known as ‘The Belt’ which cuts through The Z parking structure connecting Grand River and Gratiot Avenues between Broadway and Library Streets.
“We are thrilled to host such an iconic artist,” said Dan Mullen, Executive Vice President of Bedrock Real Estate Services. “Downtown Detroit provides the perfect backdrop for Fairey’s unique style and well-known brand of street art. Bedrock is focused on incorporating unique, interesting artwork into our downtown developments for everyone to enjoy.”
“Street art is one of the most democratic outlets for art,” Fairey said. “I consider myself a multi-platform artist, not just a street artist, but the audience I found through street art has created many of the opportunities I now have on other platforms.”
In addition to the murals, Library Street Collective will host a solo exhibition called Printed Matters, open to the public from Friday, May 22 to Saturday, August 15, featuring Fairey’s work. The artist will also create five large-scale paintings for Public Matter, a rotating outdoor public exhibit in ‘The Belt’ located behind the gallery. An opening reception in the alley is planned for Friday, May 22 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. with food trucks and live music including a DJ performance by the Detroit-based indie-pop band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Fairey will also serve as a DJ at the much anticipated event.
During his time in Detroit, Fairey will also meet with students from Detroit Academy of Arts & Sciences, a Detroit-based charter school that views artistic development as central to the education of today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders. The school is a community partner in ‘The Belt.” A piece of Fairey’s artwork will be donated and displayed at the school at the conclusion of his exhibition in Public Matter.
“Shepard Fairey’s work has had a cultural impact on the world,” said Anthony Curis, partner at Library Street Collective. “We are honored to bring this exhibition to Detroit and also provide a public platform for him to create while in our great city.”
Fairey’s murals and exhibitions are part of a broader, ongoing effort to infuse downtown Detroit with vibrant works of art. Over the past several years, Bedrock and the Rock Ventures family of companies have commissioned, partnered and collaborated with approximately 70 local artists on more than 100 projects in downtown Detroit. Plans are in the works for many more small and large-scale projects involving local, national and international artists.
Work on the Fairey mural at One Campus Martius is currently underway and is expected to be completed in time for the May 22 opening reception. People will be able to watch the mural take shape. Painting will be visible from the street throughout the project.
